Visual editor

Edit the document as rendered content while Polemic writes the LaTeX.

The visual editor shows your .tex file as a document: headings, lists, math and figures look like what they are. Polemic regenerates the LaTeX behind the scenes and keeps anything it does not model exactly as you wrote it.

Switch between the Code and Visual faces with the face toggle in the editor. Your cursor keeps its place when you switch.

What is modeled

  • Sections and headings, with a level dropdown in the toolbar. Type # to ##### at the start of a line for a heading.
  • Bold, emphasis and underline, bulleted and numbered lists, including \item[label].
  • Inline and display math, rendered as you write. Click to edit the source.
  • Figures with thumbnails, footnotes as inline pills.
  • \cite, \ref and \label as pills. Typed commands turn into pills on the closing brace. Cite pills warn about keys no .bib file defines; ref pills warn about undefined labels.
  • quote, quotation, center and abstract blocks, and the theorem family (including your own \newtheorem environments) with editable titles.
  • The preamble as a summary card, and \maketitle as an editable title card.

What stays raw

Everything else, such as verbatim, TikZ and unknown commands, shows as a raw block and round-trips byte for byte. Switching to the visual editor never rewrites LaTeX it does not understand.

Document settings

The document settings dialog edits the class, font size, paper, columns, draft mode and title metadata without touching the preamble by hand.
