Introduction

Polemic is an open source, local-first LaTeX editor for the desktop.

Polemic gives you a code editor and a live PDF preview, and compiles everything on your own machine with your own TeX distribution. Think of it as a lightweight desktop alternative to Overleaf: no account, no upload, no cloud. Your project is a plain folder on your disk.

Pre-alpha

Polemic is under active development. Things work, but expect rough edges and changes between versions.

What you get

  • Two editor faces. A code editor with LaTeX-aware completion, and a visual editor that shows the document as rendered content.
  • Live PDF preview with SyncTeX: click in the source to jump to the PDF, and back.
  • Bibliography tools for BibTeX files and Zotero, with citation hygiene built in.
  • An assets panel for images and PDFs, with ready-made \includegraphics inserts.
  • Comments, snapshots and git for reviewing and versioning your writing.
  • An optional AI quickfix for compile errors the built-in rules cannot fix.
